18 de abril de 2024Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday it will build a second auto assembly plant in Brazil, speeding up its shift in focus toward emerging markets as the fallout from its large-scale recall limits its growth potential in the U.S.
The Japanese car maker will spend $600 million to build the facility on land in Sorocaba, Sao Paulo that it bought in 2008. It intends to begin production of a newly developed compact car at the new plant in the second half of 2012 to catch up with leading car makers such as Fiat SpA and Volkswagen AG.
The car maker is developing engines for the compact model specifically for the Brazilian market. The compact will share the platform that Toyota is developing for emerging markets with its Etios compact that will be launched in India late this year.
Auto makers are rushing to increase their production capacity to keep up with surging auto demand in Brazil and other emerging markets like China as this segment has been staging a quick recovery from the financial crisis and continues to expand.
Toyota, which has been a relatively late bloomer when it comes to making a foray into these markets, has also been ramping up its production operations there. While the company’s sales after its massive recall earlier this year managed to be relatively solid, Toyota’s once sterling image of producing high-quality vehicles was severely tarnished in the U.S. and other major markets.
The maker of the Corolla and the Prius hybrid said last week it will build new engines and transmission factories in India. This was followed by its decision in April to open a new plant in China in 2012 through a local joint venture.
In Brazil, where auto sales jumped 11% to hit a record sales last year for the third straight year, Toyota sold 46,000 vehicles in the January-June period, up 9% on year. However, the Japanese auto maker still only has a tiny 3% share of the market compared with rivals such as Fiat which boasts a leading 20% share.
The Sorocaba plant will have an initial annual production capacity of 70,000 vehicles and will also export the new compact. Construction of the plant, which will employ 1,500 people, will start in September.
Toyota currently builds its Corolla model at a plant in Indaiatuba, Sao Paulo and produces auto parts at a plant in Sao Bernardo do Campo, Sao Paulo.
