18 de abril de 2024Brazilian Central Bank President Henrique Meirelles signaled to members of his party that he will remain in his post instead of resigning this week to run for office, Reuters said, citing an interview with a lawmaker.
Meirelles told leaders of his Democratic Movement Party at a dinner yesterday that if he left the central bank he would be unable to fulfill his duties as director at the Bank for International Settlements, according to Reuters, citing congressman Eunicio Oliveira.
Meirelles, who joined the party known as PMDB in September, faces an April 2 deadline to resign and become eligible to run in October’s national elections.
Meirelles said yesterday he would make a decision on his future in the next 24 hours, taking into account a request by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva to stay in his job.
