18 de abril de 2024President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has angrily denied that he and the prime minister of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, were “oriented” by the president of the United States, Barack Obama, in their negotiations with Iran that resulted in the Declaration of Tehran of May 17, in which a nuclear swap deal was reached. According to Lula, Brazil and Turkey did not act in the name of anyone else in their efforts to achieve the agreement.
“Nobody gave us power of attorney and we are do not need power of attorney from anybody in order to deal with the nuclear question,” declared Lula in comments made as he welcomed Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Brasilia yesterday. Later the two leaders had lunch together. Lula and Erdogan have confirmed that they received a letter from Obama a few weeks before their visit to Tehran. The letter contains a series of recommendations that are similar to the final text of the ten-point Declaration of Tehran.
According to Lula, agreements and consensus are products of open minds. “Truculence will not even resolve problems at home, between family members. We have sent out a signal and we hope there is sufficient wisdom to understand all the implications: the political moment, the gesture that Iran made and Brazil’s position.”
Lula went on to say that in their reaction the superpowers showed that they did not expect Brazil and Turkey to close a deal. “We did what they have been trying to do for years, unsuccessfully. People just don’t get it: 21st century politics call for more transparency and dialogue.”
As for the UN Security Council and possible sanctions, as well as any action by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Lula just said he hoped they would carefully analyze the situation and avoid punishing anyone. “We just have to wait and see what they say,” he concluded.
