14 de abril de 2010Avatar director James Cameron and actress Sigourney Weaver have been in Brazil to promote their sci-fi blockbuster film.
Cameron said he hoped his film’s environmental message would be a wake-up call to people about the importance of respecting nature.
The pair planted a tree in Sao Paulo’s Ibirapuera Park – the first of one million trees to be planted in 15 countries worldwide through a partnership between Twentieth Century Fox and the Earth Day Network.
While they are in Brazil, the Hollywood stars are expected to protest against a proposed dam in the Amazon that would be the world’s third-largest hydroelectric project.
They will join about 1,000 demonstrators in Brasilia’s streets as they urge the government to halt the planned Belo Monte project.
Brazil’s government says Belo Monte will provide much-needed clean energy for the country, but Indian groups say they will be displaced by the dam.
