18 de abril de 2024The Brazilian Supreme Court says it will shelve a request to authorize an investigation into Central Bank President Henrique Meirelles.
The court says Attorney General Roberto Gurgel withdrew the request to investigate Meirelles for alleged tax crimes because the allegations were the same that had been subject to a probe in 2007. Those charges were dropped.
In a statement issued Thursday, the court noted that Brazil’s penal code stipulates that the case be shelved unless new evidence emerges, “and no new facts have appeared.”
Last year, Meirelles joined the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party and is said to be considering a run for the Senate in October’s general elections.
