Along with a new minimum wage (R$622 per month), Brazil begins 2012
with a new unemployment benefit ceiling: the maximum payment rises
14.12% from R$1,010.34 to R$1,1163.76.
Unemployment benefits are paid as follows: an unemployed worker who
worked for between six and eleven months during the last three years can
receive three payments. Unemployed workers who were employed between 12
and 23 months receive four payments. An unemployed worker who worked at
least 24 months receives five payments. The catch is that the work must
be on-the-books (“carteira assinada”).
