25 de fevereiro de 2010Brazil’s central bank President Henrique Meirelles won’t be a candidate for public office “as far as I know,” President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva told reporters in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico.
“As far as I know, Meirelles is not candidate for anything,” Lula told reporters at the end of a summit of Latin American and Caribbean leaders. He added that he would be “at peace” if Meirelles decides to seek office.
“Today we can make these changes without problems, without fear, because everyone knows that my government became known because of the seriousness of its economic policy,” Lula said.
Meirelles, 64, has served as president of the central bank since 2003. On Feb. 11, he ruled out running for governor of his home state of Goias while keeping open the possibility of seeking another office in this year’s October elections. Meirelles, who joined the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party in September, pledged to make a decision about his political future by the end of March.
