25 de março de 2010“The rhythm of construction for the 2014 World Cup is not what it should be. And this is worrisome,” says João Alberto Viol, the president of the National Union of Architectural and Engineering Firms (Sinaeco). “This could become a serious problem for Brazil because the whole world is watching and will notice if things get too far behind schedule.” Viol made his comments at the 5th World Urban Forum that is taking place in Rio de Janeiro.
“It is 2010 and work should be underway. What we want to know is: where are the plans for the 2014 World Cup?” Viol says there is a problem with adequate planning that could result in structural problems in the cities where games will take place. That could mean traffic jams, disorder and airports that are overwhelmed, he explained.
“The World Cup is a unique opportunity to modernize. The eyes of the world will be on Brazil and we have to care about what they see,” warned Viol. In his remarks he cited recent reports of structural problems at the Engenhão stadium in Rio that was built for the 2007 Pan American games that seemed to indicate that along with huge cost overruns there was some shoddy construction at that time. “We have to be concerned with doing things right. The work must be planned carefully and executed correctly. What happened with the Pan American games is an example for us of what to avoid,” he declared.
