im Yong Kim, the U.S. nominee for the World Bank presidency, on Tuesday met with former World Bank President James Wolfensohn at the Treasury Department.
They met for discussions before Kim kicked off a two-week tour to World Bank member countries to garner support for his candidacy, but the department did not specify the topics of their discussions.
Kim will travel to countries including China, Japan, Ethiopia, South Korea, India, Brazil and Mexico between March 27 and April 9, the department announced on Monday.
The Washington-based bank announced on Friday that Kim, Nigeria ‘s Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Colombia’s Jose Antonio Ocampo were the three candidates for the bank’s presidency. This is the first time in the bank’s history that two contenders will compete with a U.S. nominee to replace outgoing Robert Zoellick, whose term expires at the end of June.
Nominated by former U.S. president Bill Clinton, Wolfensohn served as World Bank president between 1995 and 2005.
