Minister of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, Miguel Jorge, speaking to EBC reporters during a radio program interview, declared that the United Nations sanctions against Iran could open a window of opportunity for Brazilian exports. Jorge pointed out that the sanctions prohibit mostly arms and weapons – “Something we have never exported there and never intended to export to them,” said the minister.
Jorge revealed that Iran has become the second biggest importer of Brazilian beef and whole chicken and that other food products could be of interest as other countries are expected to cut back on their trade relations with Iran. “There will probably be a natural drawback by many countries because of the sanctions. And that could be an opportunity for Brazil. In spite of the sanctions, I just don’t think anyone is going to raise objections to food exports to Iran,” said the minister.
