12 de maio de 2010The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) Monday honored Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva with the “Global Champion in the Battle against Hunger”.
Josette Sheeran, executive director of the WFP, granted the award to Lula during the opening session of the Brazil-Africa Dialogue on Food Security, Fight Against Hunger and Rural Development at Itamaraty Palace in Brasilia.
Lula was awarded for giving priority to fight against hunger during his two presidential terms which will end on Dec. 31, 2010.
“Lula, you gave people the most important thing: hope. Brazil has achieved all the Millennium Goals and showed the world that fighting hunger has an economic meaning. The Zero Hunger (program) costs less than 2 percent of the national budget,” Sheeran said.
Among the reasons for the award are the income transfer programs implemented in Brazil and also the president’s active work in supporting other countries to fight hunger, such as Haiti.
According to the UN, the “Global Champion in the Battle against Hunger” award is granted to individuals “for their vision and leadership in addressing hunger, and for showing that the fight against hunger and child undernutrition can be won.”
Several leaders have already received the honor, such as former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, current Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah.
