15 de março de 2011The Brazilian embassy in Japan has a total of 254,000 Brazilians registered as living in Japan (most of them descendants of Japanese immigrants who came to Brazil. They are known as dekassegui – a Japanese word that means someone who leaves to go to work – in this case, who left Brazil to make money in Japan).
As of Saturday afternoon (March 12) the embassy reported that it had not received information of Brazilian victims of the earthquake and subsequent tsunami. Most of the destruction was in the northeast part of the country. Most of the Brazilian residents in the country are in the southern areas, although around 400 are in the region around the Fukushima nuclear power plant.

Some Brazilians who were in Japan during the earthquake and tsunami started arriving back in Brazil Sunday evening.
