18 de abril de 2024Olof Skoog appointed to Political and Security Committee.
Olof Skoog, a Swedish career diplomat, is to chair the European Union’s Political and Security Committee (PSC), the main decision-making body on EU security missions abroad.
Skoog was appointed by Catherine Ashton, the EU’s foreign policy chief, today (16 November).
The coming into force of the Lisbon treaty means that the chairman of the PSC is, for the first time, a permanent position. It is part of the political leadership – the ‘policy board’ – of the European External Action Service, the EU’s new diplomatic service.
Skoog was until this summer head of the foreign and security policy department in Sweden’s permanent representation to the EU and Sweden’s ambassador to the PSC.
He served as the Swedish foreign ministry’s political director in 2004-07, and was ambassador to Colombia, Panama, Venezuela and Ecuador in 2001-04. He also served with the United Nations inspection mission in Iraq in the run-up to the 2003 war.
