Violence on federal highways was down this prolonged Easter holiday weekend, compared to what happened this year during carnival, according to the Federal Highway Patrol (“Polícia Rodoviária Federal – PRF”). During carnival the PRF registered 213 highways accident deaths, while this Easter there were 175. The number of accidents was also down 7% (from 4,165 during carnival to 3,861 during Easter).
The PRF head of Operations, Giovani Di Mambro, declared that the reduction was positive, but that the numbers are still too high. He observed that the most dangerous highways in Brazil were in the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais.
“As the number of vehicles has increased significantly in Brazil, the highways remain the same. That makes it difficult to bring down the number of accidents and deaths,” said Mambro.
