18 de abril de 2024The director general elect of the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), Jose Graziano, in his first comments after being elected on Sunday for a term that begins in January 2012, declared that due to world financial instability food prices will remain high for some time.
“This is not a temporary lack of equilibrium. As long as we are unable to achieve global financial stability commodity prices will reflect this situation,” said Graziano, adding that poor countries that import food will be most affected and should get assistance from FAO.
“In the near future, this will be a relevant task that FAO will play an important role in. There will be a need to assistance poor countries deal with the volatility of prices [and supply],” declared Graziano who occuipied a position as minister of Food Security in the Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva administration.
