23 de dezembro de 2009DOHA: The first official visit of the Emir H H Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to Brazil, scheduled for January 20, would be a turning point in the growing relations between the two countries, the Brazilian Ambassador to Qatar, Anuar Nahes, said yesterday.
The one-day visit of the Emir, which is part of a Latin American tour, comes in response to an invitation extended by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva during his visit to Qatar in April this year, to attend the second summit of Arab-South American countries.
The Emir had visited Brazil in 2005 to attend the first summit of Arab-South American countries.
“The relations between Brazil and Qatar have been growing, especially after opening of the Brazilian Embassy in Qatar in 2005 and the Qatari Embassy in Brazil in 2007. The historic visit of the Emir is expected to herald a new era in bilateral relations,” Nahes told The Peninsula yesterday. He hoped that the Emir’s visit would pave the way for a reciprocal visit by the Brazilian President to Qatar later next year.
The envoy said the high-profile visit would boost mutual relations in various sectors, particularly in trade and investment. It could lead to signing of several bilateral agreements. “There is tremendous scope for developing relations between the two countries, particularly in the field of trade and investment. We want more Brazilian investment in Qatar as well as Qatari investment in Brazil. Sports is another area of shared interest,” said Nahes.
He said the volume of trade between Qatar and Brazil was to the tune of $500m per year.
