Brazil’s largest telecommunications company, said late on
Thursday it had made a net loss of 395 million reais ($250 mln)
in the first-quarter of 2011.
The company said changes to the way some items were listed
in its accounts and an increasingly competitive market were
among the main reasons for the reported loss.
It had posted a profit of 518 million reais in the year-ago
quarter and a profit of 284 million reais in the fourth quarter
of 2010.
Earnings before before interest, tax, depreciation and
amortization fell almost 22 percent from the same quarter of
2010 to 1.99 billion reais.
The indicator, known as EBITDA, is widely used by investors
as a gauge of operational profitability.
