Brazilian former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva will undergo two weeks of treatment for pneumonia, doctors said Monday.
The former president, who has just finished a radiotherapy treatment for laryngeal cancer, was admitted to the Sirio Libanes Hospital in Sao Paulo on Sunday, with symptoms of fever, swollen throat and swallowing difficulties.
The doctors said Lula was diagnosed with a pulmonary infection and has to take antibiotics for up to two weeks.
“Once his condition improves, he can take the antibiotics at home,” his doctor Artur Katz said.
Katz said that Lula took a tomography test on Monday, and that his laryngeal tumor could not be detected.
The doctor said that a definite answer on whether the tumor is gone or not can only be given after the swelling in Lula’s throat goes down.
Lula was diagnosed with throat cancer last October and was immediately put under treatment. He had undergone several rounds of chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.
