Event will be attended by 45 UN member countries
Between February 22 and March 4 Brazil will take part in the 55th Meeting of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), an economic and social agency at the United Nations (UN). The event, held in New York (the United States) will be attended by representatives from 45 member countries, and other guests. This year the main theme of the conference is “Access and participation of women and girls to education, training, science and technology, including for the promotion of women’s equal access to full employment and decent work.”
The Brazilian delegation will be headed up by the Minister at the Department of Women’s Policies (SPM), Iriny Lopes. In all, the Brazilian team is made up of 16 people, including representatives of the SPM, the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), National Council of Women’s Rights (CNDM) and Brazilian women scientists from major research centers in different regions of the country.
The delegations from Brazil, India and the United States will coordinate a side event on “Changing Fixed Attitudes: New Approaches to Promoting Women and Girls in Science.” This axis will focus on successful programs and strategies to support women in science within educational institutions and industry.
The CSW has been held annually in the United States since 1946. The event brings together ministers, advisers and representatives of civil society from around the world to discuss, propose and pass resolutions and declarations of an international character, to evaluate progress on gender equality, to identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote the advancement of women worldwide.
