18 de abril de 2024Brazil’s foreign minister says he is confident congress will approve an agreement to triple the amount Brazil pays Paraguay for some of the energy from a border dam built by both nations.
Brazil’s state-run Agencia Brasil news agency quotes Celso Amorim as saying the agreement “is just and benefits both nations.”
The 1973 treaty that led to the construction of the huge Itaipu dam entitles each country to half of its 14,000 megawatt installed capacity. Paraguay sells 95 percent of its share back to Brazil.
The agreement signed over the weekend increases from $120 million to $360 million the amount Paraguay will receive annually for the share it sells to Brazil.
