18 de abril de 2024A total of 110,000 law school graduates and students throughout the country took the Bar Association’s (“Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil – OAB”) first phase test of the Unified Bar Exam (“Exame da Ordem Unificado”) in June. Yesterday, Sunday, July 8, the 46,000 candidates who passed the first phase took the second phase test.
The Brazilian Bar exam was created in 1994 and is considered difficult. In 2011, out of a total of 101,936 candidates, only 25,912 passed both phases of the test and became practicing lawyers. The country’s law schools graduate some 90,000 would-be lawyers per year.
Law school students complain that they are not prepared for the test in their studies. “It’s practically impossible to pass the OAB exam without taking a special course after you graduate from law school,” said Paulo Roberto Amorim, who was taking the second phase test for the second time.
Denise de Fátima dos Santos, who was also taking the test for the second time, said that she thought the exam, although difficult, was necessary to prepare future professionals of the law. “The exam requires more than just knowledge of codes. You have to understand how courts interpret them. You have to know about cases,” she said.
