After a Year in Economic Overdrive, Brazil Hopes to Elude Pitfalls

13 de outubro de 2011Wednesday evening representatives of postal worker unions and Post
Office management (the company is state-run in Brazil) met to negotiate
an end to a strike that had lasted 20 days. The meeting (“audiência de
conciliação”) at the Superior Labor Court (“Tribunal Superior do
Trabalho – TST”), hammered out an agreement that would include a salary
increase of 6.87% for all workers and a one-time bonus of R$80 to be
paid in October.
It was also decided that the workers would be able to make up for days not worked while on strike and thus not lose any pay.
However, the deal was rejected by 18 out of the 35 unions representing
the workers (many of the unions are from different states). The strike
continues.
