Now in its 27th day, the strike by postal workers is set to go the Superior Labor Court (“Tribunal Superior do Trabalho – TST”) tomorrow, Tuesday, October 11. Employees and management (“servidores e a direção da empresa”) have been unable to agree on anything that is being negotiated: what to do about the days that were not worked, the size of a salary raise, the payment of a bonus and an across-the-board pay increase (“aumento linear”) for all employees.
The Post Office insists on docking pay for the days not worked and has presented a proposal to increase salaries by 6.78%, pay a bonus of R$800, plus an across-the-board increase of R$60 in January.
Union representatives have rejected the bonus and will not accept having the days on strike discounted.
Meanwhile, the TST has ordered the unions to ensure that 40% of postal workers are on the job or face a daily fine of R$50,000.
On its internet page, the company says 80% of its workers are on the job and that post offices around the country are operating normally. Labor unions say that is not true.
