Brazilian Labor Minister Carlos Lupi said on Thursday that his country would generate 2 million formal jobs in 2010.
“I think 2010 will be the best year of the Lula administration when it comes to job generation: over 2 million job posts will be generated and the GDP growth will reach 7 to 8 percent,” said the minister at a signing ceremony of agreements on developing the tourism sector in Niteroi, Rio de Janeiro state.
For this year, Lupi estimated a balance of 1.1 million new job posts. In fact, the figures have already been surpassed in October, but the minister warned of the possibility of negative growth in December, which often occur in the month.
According to Lupi, Brazil’s domestic market played an important role in the country’s economic recovery and subsequent rise in job generation figures.
“The strength of the domestic market gave Brazil the chance to recover faster than any other country,” the minister said, adding “a very strong rebound in salaries” had been registered in the country.
Lupi stressed that the growth in the job market was the ultimate proof that Brazil had entered a phase of sustainable growth.
