5 de abril de 2010Brazil will donate an additional 172 million U.S. dollars to support the reconstruction of quake-torn Haiti, Brazilian foreign minister said Wednesday.
Helping Haiti recover from the Jan. 12 massive earthquake goes beyond all political, religious or ideological disputes, Amorim said.
“It is a challenge for the international community to show its goodwill and its capacity to gather around a good cause,” the Minister said.
The donation includes 15 million dollars to help cover Haiti’s fiscal deficit and 40 million dollars as part of the South American Union’s aid program.
Brazil had already donated 167 million dollars to finance Haiti’s reconstruction.
Brazil believes Haiti will overcome the challenges lying ahead and “take full control of its destiny”, Amorim said.
“I cannot remember I had ever felt so much compassion for another country,” he said, adding that helping Haiti is something not only the Brazilian government, but also the Brazilian society as a whole is committed to.
The donations should mainly be used to help Haiti create necessary conditions for ensuring a long-term development with social justice and political stability, the minister stressed.
