Brazil’s Senate has approved the creation of the Olympic Public Authority to coordinate government preparations for the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The bill creating the Olympic body was approved Tuesday night by a 46-13 vote.
The same bill was approved last week by the lower house Chamber of Deputies.
The Folha de S.Paulo newspaper says Henrique Meirelles, the former president of Brazil’s central bank, has accepted an invitation by President Dilma Rousseff to head the Olympic agency.
Senator Lindbergh Farias says he expects the company to start operating next week in Rio de Janeiro.
