The statue of Christ the Redeemer — a mountain-top monument to Jesus Christ in Rio de Janeiro, is to get a facelift starting this week.
Renovations of the 130ft (40 metre) high statue will cost $3.8 million (£2.3 million) and take until June to complete, Brazil’s Catholic Church said.
The statue will still be accessible during the works, although it will be shrouded in transparent safety sheeting to prevent injuries from falling objects.
Workers will repair the mosaic on its pedestal, clean humidity stains and remove scratches on the 78-year-old monument.
